Dreaming of a White Bunny

Celebrate white rabbits with Sweet Binks’ 4th Annual “Dreaming of a White Bunny” campaign!

To promote adoptions of big white bunnies (BWB’s), Sweet Binks likes to celebrate them!  Unfortunately, in rabbit rescues and shelters, white, ruby-eyed buns are usually the least likely to get adopted.  Kind of like big, black dogs are least likely to get adopted in dog shelters. Many people seem uncomfortable with albino rabbits and we hope we can change a few minds! These buns, if given the opportunity, often become the most endearing, beautiful and awesome companions.  We would like to hear your “big, white bunny” stories! E-mail us and tell us about your wonderful companions at sweetbinks@verizon.net and include photos too!  Listed below are some wonderful, big white buns that would love a home!

Make our holiday wishes come true - Adopt us!

This pretty and sweet gal is Lyric.  Lyric is very good with her litterbox and playful. She would love to be in a home for the holidays!

Sweet Binks is proud to participate for the 5th year!  11 buns already adopted in this years campaign!

Here is a bun most of us can’t resist! A big California gal!  This is Carly and she is about 2 years old, spayed and just a big bundle of happiness!!

These two goobers are Bingo & Bailey and they are a fun pair! They have been at Sweet Binks since Feb. 2007 and are approaching their 1 year mark at Sweet Binks. These boys are neutered brothers and are about 1.5 years old now. We call them the “binky brothers” as they love to show off their crazy binkies!! We hope these boys find a home soon where they can entertain to no end!

Why Some Rabbits Have Pink Eyes

A long, long time ago when the world was very new and all the animals were learning why they were created, the Maker of Animals talked to the rabbits.

"You must help our world continue by helping to feed the eagles and thefoxes, for without them and others of their kind, all life on our world willdie out. In gratitude, I grant you the ability to run very fast so many of you will escape. I also grant you many other gifts which will allow your family to increase. Rabbits will always be!"

One odd-looking little white rabbit with pink eyes spoke up, saying "But Maker, what about me? I look really different from my brothers and sisters and my eyes are so sensitive I can't bear to go outside during the daylight. I'm afraid my family will disappoint you and fail in your plans for us."

The Maker gently took up the white rabbit and spoke thus, "Oh, sweet bunny, you have a very special gift! You are all white to show the humans in this new world rabbits' pure love, kindness, and gentleness. You and many others of your kind, white or not, will live with special humans who need and appreciate the very special connection between humans and many of my animals."

"Maker", said the white bunny, "my family will gladly give love to those who seek it. But still I wonder why my eyes are pink - so different than all these other rabbits."

The Maker stroked the fur of this oh-so-curious, smart little rabbit now called Bunny. "Well, my own, your kind in particular will be those blessed rabbits who can see their humans through rose-colored eyes!"   And so it is.

Today we celebrate adoption day in honor of our BIG WHITE BUN, Cassie! What a year of adventure and learning it has been!  I saw Cassie on the Sweet Binks web site and immediately knew she belonged in our family. Her snow white fur and ladylike gaze were hard to forget. She is large and white with lop ears that flounce up and down when she gallops. It took us a while to get to know one another. We had to force her out of her cage after the first few days as she was reluctant to venture out on her own. One year later she is totally free-range!  In the middle of the night I can never trip on her as her large whiteness is a presence that cannot be missed!  I have been amazed to discover how delightful and free our Cassie has become.  Such a creature of habit! She became easy to live with once we understood her habits and attitudes. She eats with us when we have our meals and sleeps in our bedroom. At the end of the day she practically knocks us over racing up to the bedroom. She has truly established herself as a member of our family. She is sensitive, loving, and expressive.  Big white buns are so much fun!

I donate exclusively to rabbit shelters, and you guys are doing a wonderful thing. My heart is touched for these big guys.  I have some of your t-shirts and wear them to the gym to promote rabbit rescue and make people laugh at the "Luv your buns." Keep up the good work. I know it’s a cliché but don’t judge a book by its cover. I admit, when I first saw her I wasn’t sure I would be interested in an albino rabbit probably for the same reasons that other people pass up on these buns. However, the very fist time I knelt down to pet Lucky (now Ruby!) I knew she’d be coming home with me. Instead of running from me or cowering, Ruby plopped down and sprawled out chin on the floor and kicked out her hind legs. This is the rabbit for me! I said. And each day that I interact with her I couldn’t be more positive that she’s the bunny for me.  Whenever I come home from work or get up in the morning she greets me with binkies or what I also refer to as “Turbo Bunny”. She gets so excited that she runs and hops all over her play pen. The most notable thing about Ruby is the way she sleeps. Thank goodness Pam warned me ahead of time. She literally falls over (onto her side or back) and passes out. I sometimes have to stop and make sure she’s breathing! There are moments I could swear I see a smile on her face as she sleeps peacefully (and like a log). She’s lovable, playful, goofy and overall the perfect addition to my home. Thank you to Sweet Binks!

Here is some holiday fun!  This was written last year by Sweet Binks’ friend and volunteer, Katie A!! Great job, Katie!

’Twas the night before Christmas, no sign of the sun,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a bun;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The rabbits were nestled all snug in their hay,
But visions of carrot tops kept them awake;
And I with bunny hair stuck to my lap,
Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap;
When out in the living room there arose such a sound,
Like many Flemish Giants binkying around,
Tore open the door and bumped into the couch,
And startled my bunny by yelling a loud “Ouch!”,
When, what to my wondering eyes should I see,
But a skinny chick in a Santa suit looking guilty,
As she scooped up several buns in each gloved hand,
I thought either Santa’s on Atkins or this was our Pam.
She ran out to her truck, put the petal to the floor,
Shouting “Merry Christmas to all rabbits! Oh, and you’ve got 5 more!”

Happy Holidays from Sweet Binks!
